Cell phone desktop

This has been buzzing about lately, the whole idea of your phone competing with your laptop for most useful device. I read this blog entry and I find that there are so many more uses for mobile devices headed our way.

Like it or not, the cell phone is getting more and more powerful, and the ability to do anything from anywhere that involves a computer and the internet is now going to be standard. Can’t find a WiFi hotspot? Just crank up your cell phone.

I like the fact that the biggest inroad to the new cell phone craze is the use of video. Yes. I know all the iphone geeks are saying we have had that for a while. Yes Yes. But I still have some fundamental issues with the engineering of the phone. But the copycatters are coming. The new phones will be reaching for the bar the iphone set. Why? Because of all the stuff you can do on that phone. For me, video is the main element. Not so much from a user standpoint, but from a deliverable standpoint. The downside is file size. But file sizes are continuing to shrink. And the speed for cell phone use is catching up. It won’t be long before we see near T1 speeds on a handheld device. If you are tech geek, the world is unfolding before your eyes.

Great post! I’m glad you enjoyed my post, and I couldn’t agree more: video on the cell phone will open up many opportunities for both marketers and consumers. Thanks for the shout out!

Regarding your post, wouldn’t it be even wilder if, when you are walking by the Starbucks, and the manager calls your cell phone personally? Sure it’s an invasion of your privacy. But wow, talk about on the spot marketing. Or, “Hey Tony. I see you walking by our shop. Looks like you could use a haircut. Come in right now and I will give you a 10% discount.”

You know I’m about as techy as it gets, but even having an iPhone, I just don’t watch video on it that much. I use it for everything else and it basically is a mobile office, allowing me to answer e-mail while on the road. But the video part hasn’t really grabbed me.

There have been a few times people were telling me about a funny YouTube video and I’d whip out the phone and watch it one the spot. I’ve never even put any of our hundreds of movies or TV shows on it to watch.
