It Must Fit

If the one size fits all mentality worked for church, I think we would be in a mess. There are a lot of buzz words being talked about like context and missional and culture. Maybe not so new, but certainly talked alot about in the last few months and years.

For me, I find I have to constantly break things down into the category of “what is God saying to our church right now?” What works in California might not work here in north Austin. What works in Florida might not work here in north Austin.

But I think we do have to be people who want to know what God is doing in the earth and how we adapt it to our local church setting. I think equally important as all the other buzz words should be the word fabric. How does our church mesh with the fabric of other churches in our city? What happens as our church continues to grow and get traction? How will we celebrate the life and flow of other churches and be in conjunction with them and what God is doing in their midst? We may all be on the same team, but we may not all play in the same league. We may all be on the same team, but we may not attract the same players. We may be on the same team, but the trophies we are after might look different than the trophies other people are after.

In essence, it must fit us and what God is talking to us about. If we are called to be a part of the overall fabric of our city, state, nation and world, we need to make sure we are what God made us to be or we won’t fit very well into the fabric.
